This aspiration is one central theme of CHAMPION, Starr's glowing debut EP release.

The EP is a careful selection of songs highlighting a plight common to men, women, boys and girls alike: the struggle to overcome. “Quite accidentally, I realised that each track was portraying my desire to conquer sin, praise despite my circumstance and make God proud”. This is clearly evident on the praise anthem ‘In The Dance': ‘I'll praise Him in the dance/I'm gonna lift my hands/No matter what the circumstance/I'll praise Him/I'll praise Him in the dance'.

Such lyrical declaration is bold for the young newcomer. Starr was raised in a low-income, single parent home and, despite the privilege of government sponsored private school education, he often felt short-changed by the hand of destiny. “I was always the kid without. Even in making this album, I had to clear hurdles on my track of hope. There were times that it felt like an Olympian effort. But by His grace I haven't lost the race yet”.

At school, Starr's glow was quickly acknowledged with his talent paving the way to the awards of various competitions. However, it wasn't until the separation of his parents that his true gift emerged. “It was in the heat of that fire that my gold of song was refined. My first two songs were penned within the hour”.

A*'s songwriting prowess is clearly evident on the inspirational smash title track ‘Champion'. The Kirk Franklin-esque song bears testimony to the fact that there is only one true Champion, Christ: ‘I almost lost my mind/I thought I'd never reach the finish line/But You stepped in right on time/And now I can say with pride/That You are my Champion'. “I want this song [and album] to remind people that not only is hope tangible but their victory is possible. Christ is the victor and we are His trophies. No matter what hurdles are in our way or what addiction we may be struggling to overcome, we can win”.

And this CD definitely wins. With contemporary, traditional and worship sounds, CHAMPION will provide Aaron Starr with a firm 1 standing position on the podium of music and shine forth as a warm light of victory.
